"Self-Portrait" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Chikako Oyama. At a time when male photographers and masculine perspectives on nudes were dominant, Oyama sought a unique form of expression from the standpoint of a woman photographing women. Throughout this book, her perspective consistently attempts to capture subjects not as passive beings to be observed, but as active bodies possessing will, tension, and presence. The title "Self-Portrait" should not be understood as a self-portrait, but rather as a "self-image" in the sense of bringing forth one's own inner fantasies, desires, and images through the bodies of others. As the artist herself states, in this book, which attempts to express images through the human body, nudes are treated not merely as subjects, but as a medium for imagination. Beyond sensuality and theatricality, questions about the subjectivity surrounding the body permeate the work, making it an important practice of female bodily expression in 1990s Japanese photography. While a nude photography collection, it can be positioned as an experiment in exploring self-image through the body.
