"Balloon Position (Signed)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Emi Anrakuji (1963-). After studying oil painting at Musashino Art University, Anrakuji experienced vision loss due to a brain tumor and a long period of convalescence, and taught herself photography. Using her own body and familiar objects as subjects, she has built an original world where reality and fantasy intersect. Focusing on self-portraits, she incorporates elements of painting and objects into her photography, exploring themes such as bodily sensations, loneliness, desire, life and death. This book is a reproduction of a handmade photobook created before her debut in 2005, which remained unpublished for about 20 years. By layering hand-painted images and collage-like expressions over monochrome photographs, she sublimates the anxieties and fantasies lurking within her into images that are sometimes sensual, sometimes humorous. This book strongly reflects the early experimental spirit that led her to transition from painting to photography, and is an important book that allows us to understand the origins of the artist that led to her later works.
