"Simmani (Signed)" is a collection of works by South Korean-born, New York-based photographer Jungjin Lee. In 1987, the work quietly documented in monochrome photographs the year-long journey of an elderly man harvesting wild ginseng on Ulleung Island, South Korea. Originally titled "A Remote House on a Distant Island," Lee re-edited the photographs himself and reconstructed them under the title "SIMMANI" (meaning "wild ginseng gatherer") approximately 30 years later. This reorganization brings to light the layers of time that intertwine between records and memories, past and present. Lee hand-applied emulsion to traditional Korean paper (hanji) and employed a printing technique that deliberately preserved the texture and handprints of the paper, elevating his photographs to "tactile images" reminiscent of paintings and prints. The island's natural beauty, aging bodies, and the changing seasons—the quiet time, hardships, and memories of daily life—are conveyed to the viewer's body and senses. "SIMMANI" combines documentary realism with poetic sensibility, quietly reexamining the passage of time, coexistence with nature, memory and loss.
