"The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957 (Second Edition)" is a collection of works by American photographer, film director, and musician Gordon Parks. Parks was the first successful African-American photographer and film director before and after the war. As a teenager, he was a jazz pianist, but in his twenties, he self-taught himself in photography, making a name for himself in journalism covering topics such as poverty, racism, and the civil rights movement. He was also hired by Vogue art director Alexander Liberman to photograph fashion. Parks worked as a staff photographer for LIFE, a landmark photojournalism of the time, for over ten years. This work is based on the photographs and essay "The Atmosphere of Crime" that Parks published in the September 1957 issue of LIFE. The book depicts the crime scene in America at the time in color with a brilliant layout. The fact that a photographer of African descent was doing this in the 1950s is astonishing. This classic book sold out immediately after its release from Steidl, and many photography professionals have cited it as one of the best books of 2020. Second edition published in 2021.
