Oasis Hotel: A hitchhike along China's Cross-Desert Highway is a collection of works by Italian photographer Nicolo Degiorgis (1985-). Degiorgis is a contemporary artist who is both a photographer and a publisher. He studied Chinese at the University of Venice and political science at the University of Trieste and Leiden, and founded his own publishing house, Rorhof. He has attracted worldwide attention for his visual works on the themes of human rights and social minorities, and has won numerous awards, including the Paris Photo Aperture, for his work Hidden Islam, which documents Muslim prayer spaces. This book is a collection of photos taken while hitchhiking along the road that runs through the Taklamakan Desert in China. Over 92 pages, the book meticulously depicts the lives of people staying at rest areas and old inns scattered throughout the desert, known as "oases." The texture of the dry desert, the desolate architecture, the deserted signs, and the scenery floating in the wilderness are moving. The intersecting elements of documentary and poetry offer a striking perspective on the "daily life" of the frontier. The traveling figure and perspective of the planner and filmmaker also give the work a sense of unity, quietly telling a tale of silence, solitude and wandering.
