"Painukaji" is a photo collection by leading Okinawan photographer Taira Koshichi. With the goal of "using his camera as a weapon to raise awareness of Okinawa's issues," Taira Koshichi has been documenting conflicts and struggles surrounding U.S. military bases since the 1960s as a journalist. However, like his contemporaries, such as Higa Yasuo, he began to feel a sense of emptiness in his work after Okinawa's return to Japan, growing tired of speaking out. He gradually left the mainland and turned to other islands. Just as Higa became devoted to women, festivals, and gods, Taira turned his lens to the islands' nature, culture, lifestyle, and people. This self-published work is Taira's masterpiece, and it won the 2nd Kimura Ihei Award. Taira's eyes and heart display his intense sensitivity to light and shadow, and his ability to capture even the wind. This is one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of Japanese photography, capturing the "unchanging" and "changing" Okinawa as he looked at himself and Okinawa from within since its return to Japan.
