"Neznamy / The Unknown" is a photobook by leading Czech photographer Josef Sudek. At the age of three, he lost his father, a house painter, and during World War I, he lost his right arm. Due to his handicap, he gave up white-collar work and began to pursue photography in earnest in the early 1920s. From the 1930s, when he worked with fellow artists including photographer Jaomir Funke on avant-garde photographic expression, to the 1940s, when he captured Prague's iconic architecture and landscapes, to the 1950s, when he was immersed in creating works inspired by nature both inside and outside his studio, Sudek has continued to explore new possibilities through photography throughout his career of more than 40 years. This book is a collection of works published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Czech National Moravian Gallery from 2006 to 2007. Our gallery, which owns many of Sudek's precious illustrations, has compiled this book to introduce beautiful vintage prints, ranging from color to black and white, focusing on unpublished works from Sudek's early period.
