"In the American West" was a turning point for Richard Avedon. Commissioned by the Amon Carter Museum in Texas, Avedon spent six years traveling the American West, beginning in 1979, in search of subjects he wanted to photograph, capturing a total of 762 people across 16 states. These people—coal miners, construction workers, farmers, truck drivers, waitresses, students, housewives—were completely different from the glamorous models and artists Avedon had previously photographed. Yet, their expressions and demeanor reveal hidden human strength, vulnerability, love, and dignity. One of the subjects featured in this book, truck driver Billy Mudd, finally recognized his true self in Avedon's portrait. He vowed to start afresh, quit his job, and returned to his estranged family. Avedon's portraits, which reveal incisive details about people's inner lives that even they themselves are unaware of, are imbued with a refined sensibility and tender love.
