"Taido: Young Samurai Bodybuilders of Japan" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Tamotsu Yato. Tamotsu Yato was a male trainee of the Takarazuka Revue and later joined Nikkatsu, where he also worked as an actor. Yato is known for photographing Yukio Mishima, and it was his partner, Meredith Witherby, who translated Mishima's "The Sound of Waves" and "Confessions of a Mask," who brought him to Mishima. The reason Yato started photography is unclear, but it seems that Witherby, who was wealthy and had a cultural background, influenced him. Witherby then founded "John Weatherhill," publishing Yato's photobooks. Yato left behind three photobooks: "Taido," "Hadaka Matsuri," and "OTOKO," and passed away in 1973 at the age of 48. This book is the English version of Yato's first photobook. It features photographs of Japanese bodybuilders and also includes a picture of Yukio Mishima, who wrote the preface. This is a representative work by Yasushi Yato, a photographer often described as a legend. Published in 1974, second printing.
