"Kalypso & Nausikaä" is a photobook by Ata Cand (1913-2017), a photographer born in Hungary who worked primarily in the Netherlands. She began photography before the war and worked extensively in Paris and Amsterdam, from fashion to documentary. She is also known for her marriage to Ed van der Elsken in the 1950s, and is one of the leading female photographers of 20th-century Dutch photography. This work is a series created in 1956 when she traveled to southern Italy with her three children. Based on the story of Calypso and Nausicaä from Homer's "Odyssey," the children play the characters, and the photographs are taken on beaches and at ancient ruins. The improvisational costumes and the children's "pretend play" overlap with the mythological world, resulting in fantastical photographs that freely move between reality and fantasy. The photobook was already conceived at the time, and a dummy version was created, but it was not published until 2004, when Cand was 90 years old, about half a century later. Alongside his early masterpiece "Dream in the Forest," which also features children as protagonists, this book is an important resource for understanding Cand's photographic expression, which creates stories and fantasies from the familiar world of family.
