Issue 130 of "VOU," an experimental art magazine edited by the Japanese avant-garde poet Katsue Kitazono (1902–1978). Founded in 1935, "VOU" liberated poetry from the confines of linguistic expression, connecting it with art, photography, and design, making it a representative avant-garde poetry magazine of Japanese modernism. Kitazono also interacted with overseas poets such as Ezra Pound, and pursued his own unique visual poetry, such as "plastic poems" that combined words, objects, and photographs. This 1972 issue includes a variety of poems by Toshihiko Shimizu ("On 'Imaginary Architecture'"), Shohachiro Takahashi ("Paris-Milano-Firenze"), Ryo Shimamura, Shinichi Sawada, Mitsuko Inoue, Setsuko Tsuji, Keisuke Jinbo, Isao Ito, and others. Works such as "Shy Paper Napkin," "Winter Close-up," "Drawing a Square," and "IMAGE JACK." showcase an interest in everyday objects, colors, and forms. In addition to a structure where texts and poems about architecture and urban culture intersect, Kitazono's own cover design, which combines vibrant orange, geometric lines, and typography, is outstanding. This is a valuable first issue that conveys the experimental spirit of 'VOU,' which crosses the boundaries between poetry and visual arts.
