"Ballet" is a legendary photobook by Russian-born art director, designer, and photographer Alexei Brodovich (1898–1971). Brodovich, who had a decisive influence on 20th-century editorial design as the art director of "Harper's Bazaar," created his only photobook of photographs taken of the Ballets Russes touring America in the 1930s. He did not eliminate the blur, grain, afterimages, and strong contrasts that arose in the dark stage, but transformed them into the speed and physical sensation of the dance itself. Including the innovative composition with bold cropping and consecutive double-page spreads, it had a great influence on the expression of photobooks that followed. The original was published in 1945 in a limited edition of only 500 copies and is now one of the rarest books in the history of photobooks. This book is a full-fledged facsimile edition published by Little Steidl about 80 years later, and the original two volumes were disassembled and scanned in high resolution, and the density and texture of the gravure printing of the time were thoroughly reproduced using a unique 5-color printing method. This comprehensive edition includes a separate booklet detailing the production background and reproduction process, all housed in a special box.
