"Love on the Left Bank" is a photobook by Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990). One of the leading photographers of post-war Europe, he immersed himself in the lives of young people, lovers, and outsiders in Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and other cities, capturing their passion and loneliness from an intimate distance. This work, his first photobook and a representative work, was published in 1956. He photographed bohemians who gathered around Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris in the early 1950s, and presented a love story that interweaves fact and fiction, with the real-life Australian woman Vale Myers as the protagonist, "Ann." The grainy black-and-white photographs capturing young people in bars, cafes, basements, and on the streets are strung together like a film, and the technique of combining them with text to create a single narrative was extremely innovative at the time. It is an important work in the history of photobooks, foreshadowing later personal photography and diary-like photographic expressions. This book reproduces the original structure and design and is a facsimile edition published by Dewi Lewis Publishing in 2000.
