"Laments Skyscapes / From Close-range (Signed)," a collection of works by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers, was published the year after his beloved wife, Yoko, passed away. One volume of the two-volume set contains monochrome still life and landscape photographs taken on the balcony of his home, while the other volume features monochrome landscapes with added paintings. For those of us who know Araki today, this is a style that is, so to speak, "normal," but it was unthinkable when Yoko was alive, and it marks the beginning of Nobuyoshi Araki's second chapter (his mid-career as a photographer). The depictions, which seem to chronicle an empty state of mind, strongly reflect Araki's views on life and death, and brilliantly express his complex emotions (there is also a theory that he started these color paintings after being influenced by Fukase's "Hibi"...). Includes the poem "Heavenly Ema" by Gozo Yoshimasu, the text "Healing Garden" by Kotaro Iizawa, and a detailed "Nobuyoshi Araki Chronology" by Satoshi Hakkaku. Bilingual (English and Japanese). Comes with a dust jacket. Signed by the photographer .
