"OMA Rem Koolhaas' Generic City: The Unbranded City " is a project by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas (1944–). Leading OMA, Koolhaas has deciphered the structure of modern cities and the progress of globalization. In this book, he presents the concept of a "Generic City"—a city liberated from its unique history and identity—and attempts to capture the image of a city that continues to homogenize and expand. Published in conjunction with an exhibition held in Tokyo in 1995, this book employs an experimental structure in which text, photographs, and typography intersect, using Tokyo at the time as a field to construct a multi-layered image of the city. In addition to contributions and interviews by Arata Isozaki, photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki are partially inserted, and visual images related to the surface of the city and bodily sensations act as auxiliary lines, creating a structure in which theory and visuals gently intersect. A reprint edition was published in 2025, providing an opportunity to re-examine the relationship between urban theory and publishing expression in the 1990s.
