Murmuration is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi (1972-). Known for her sensitive gaze that captures the light and signs of life in everyday life, Kawauchi produced this work as a commission for "New Documents," the 2010 Brighton Photo Biennale, curated by Martin Parr. Inspired by the "murmuration" dance performed by large flocks of starlings gathering in Brighton Harbour against the evening sky, Kawauchi traces the moment when natural phenomena and everyday landscapes resonate with each other, superimposing the flocks of birds with the flow of people passing through the city. The composition of the work, which brings to light universal sensations of circulation and connection within the familiar urban context, echoes the context of the exhibition, which advocates a reinterpretation of documentary. This book presents a sense of the quiet melding of the boundaries between city and nature, and between the individual and the flock.
