"Pink Department Store" was conceived by Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama and edited by Koichi Hara. Sorayama, who has reinvented the relationship between the body and marketability, and between desire and visual imagery, has used airbrushed, metallic, and sensual depictions of the human body, has also provided a strong concept for this book. Hara, born in Yokohama in 1946, accepted the concept and shaped it into an editor. Hara gained experience in advertising and design, and in the 1980s, he received acclaim for his work on Suntory PR magazines and advertising expressions. He founded TROUT in 1985 as an editor and art director. He has also long been involved in photobook production, treating photography not simply as a collection of works, but as a medium whose meaning emerges through its composition and editing. This book is centered around Sorayama's visual concept and Hara's editorial judgment, juxtaposing photographs and images like those displayed in a department store. Rather than foregrounding the artist's individuality, the very structure, driven by planning and editing, quietly highlights the relationship between desire and image in 1980s Japan. (Cover missing)
