Japanese photographer Koichi Ishida's collection of works, "The Village Story〈Kitakami 1963-1973〉" (Signed), is a collection of his work. While attending Tokyo College of Photography (now Tokyo Polytechnic University), he frequented the editorial department of Camera Mainichi, where he met leading photojournalist Shigekazu Nagano. After two years as his assistant, he went freelance at age 22. His first book, "Brahmins and Janta -India-" (1971), was shot during a visit to India in the late 1960s. His second book, "Photo Album: Yasuka Village," followed in 1973. This book is a revised and updated edition of the original, which features images taken in Yasukamoto Village, a mountain village in Iwate Prefecture, which Ishida visited over a period of nearly ten years, beginning in 1963. Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitakami mountain range, this small village was once known as "Japan's Tibet." In 1963, it was a remote area with no electricity or bus service, and this documentary, directed by Ishida, built a relationship of trust with the self-sufficient locals. Limited to 700 copies.
