"Northern (Postcard)" is a photobook by renowned Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama. This book, a set of 23 postcards, was released by Akio Nagasawa alongside the catalog photobook published in 2009 to coincide with his "Hokkaido Prologue" exhibition, held at the Miyanomori Art Museum in Sapporo and other locations in Hokkaido. Moriyama spent three months in Hokkaido in 1978, and apart from contributing some of his photographs to camera magazines, the large number of negatives he took remained unprinted and stored in cardboard boxes for nearly 30 years. Exhibitions of his photographs began in Hokkaido in June 2009, and continued there until 2011 ("Second Chapter/Development" and "Final Chapter"). A total of three volumes of the "Northern" series have been published. Although he apparently made sporadic trips to Hokkaido before 1978, after "Goodbye Photography" (1972), Moriyama's sense of reality in his photography began to fade. He was in a slump, and after a visit to Tono, he finally arrived in Hokkaido. The snapshots are strongly influenced by the local characteristics of the northern land and the Ainu, and although there are some shots of the downtown area, the cold landscapes and simple daily life of Hokkaido seem to exude that.
