This book is a collaboration between French photographer Joe Lai (b. 1977) and Hong Kong hairstylist Heitai Cheung (b. 1989). Influenced by the updos and braiding techniques that flourished in 1960s Tokyo, particularly the work of famed geisha hair master Junji Noburyu/Shinryu, the project recreates and interprets classic hairstyle techniques while adapting them to contemporary Asian women. Cheung spent a year mastering the techniques for this series, faithfully pursuing the form of "big hair" while relying on textbooks. The photographs showcase the decorativeness of updos, the beauty of form, and meticulous use of light and shadow. The models, with their braids and hair accessories, evoke the aesthetic of 1960s Tokyo. This 44-page, softcover, limited edition of 500 copies, features English text. Aiming to combine the beauty and technique of a visual magazine, this book allows viewers to experience the intersection of eras and styles.
