"Kokusekiji Sominsai" is a collection of works by Japanese physician Yasumasa Suetake. This multifaceted record of the Sominsai, a festival held at Kokusekiji Temple in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, which recently came to an end after more than a thousand years of history, offers a multifaceted account of the festival. While working in community medicine as the vice director of a hospital, Suetake has long been an amateur photographer, photographing the festival using 8mm film and other media. Drawing on his observations and interviews, he meticulously documents the origins and progression of the event, as well as the atmosphere of local faith. This book features over 20 black-and-white photographs by photographer Minoru Sasaki, who has continued to capture the landscapes and people of Tohoku. The powerful imagery of naked men wrestling in the snowy darkness, the expressions of local people busy preparing, and the moment of prayer passed down through generations come together. This book offers a three-dimensional look at the memories of a festival that has now come to an end, both through words and photographs, and is a valuable insight into Tohoku folklore and postwar local communities.
