Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama's (1938-) limited edition collection, "LA DOS – One Picture Book Two #39," features color photographs taken on the west coast of Los Angeles in 2015, on the occasion of an exhibition in Houston, Texas. Following his black-and-white "UNO," "DOS" presents a collection of powerful color photographs of the alleyways and homes of Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and the Marina, captured over just two days. Limited to 500 copies, this collector's edition includes a signed print by the artist. Moriyama, who has previously captured the urban wilderness in black-and-white, places himself in a scene where reflected light and shadows transform into color, reimagining the urban body as a new "place" of color. The grainy, shifting focus, and vibrant coastal cityscapes draw the viewer's gaze into the depths of the alleys, highlighting the boundary between the city and the body. Though it is a small booklet, the visual torrent condensed into its pages is a quietly yet intensely memorable volume that expands Moriyama's long-held exploration of the concept of "seeing/being photographed" into another dimension: color.
