"Atokata" is a collection of works by Kishin Shinoyama, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. There was a time when Nobuyoshi Araki was synonymous with eroticism, Daido Moriyama with art, and Kishin Shinoyama with commercials. While he is generally known for his nude works featuring actresses such as Rie Miyazawa, Kanako Higuchi, and Saki Takaoka, his mastery of commercial photography is also highly acclaimed for its artistic merit. Katsumi Yuya, who designed many of Araki's collections, stated in his book "Power Designing" (1984) that "A Fine Day" is a textbook for photobooks. Another leading Japanese photographer, Takuma Nakahira, also paid tribute to Shinoyama's healthy and straightforward work in his co-authored book "Duel Photography Theory." This book is comprised of images taken in Tohoku after the Great East Japan Earthquake. It is also a collection that highlights Kishin Shinoyama's exceptional photographic skill. The following is an afterword by the photographer: "It was neither a prank by God nor a gruesome hell, but a tranquil, sacred and majestic scene. I could only gaze in awe and reverence at the power of nature."
