"PORTRAITS by AVEDON: 18th July, 1979" is a collection of works by Japanese contemporary artist Shinro Ohtake (1955-). Working across a diverse range of media, including painting, printmaking, collage, and picture books, Ohtake is known for his constantly expansive creative approach to imagery. His method of reconstructing existing images transforms past memories and cultures into new contexts, evoking fresh sensations in the viewer. Inspired by American photographer Richard Avedon's 1979 "Portraits" series, this book features 73 drawings. Responding to Avedon's portraits, Ohtake reinterprets the images using line and form, elevating the intensity of the photographs to a whole new level. Published by the Uwajima Museum of Contemporary Art, this compact volume condenses the dialogue between the two artists on the theme of portraiture.
