"Rojo" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Yuta Fuchigami (1987-). After working in a studio before going independent, Fuchigami began his "Rojo" series around 2016, primarily in the Ueno district of Tokyo, garnering attention for his straightforward portraits of passersby. The simple technique of directly approaching strangers and asking them to stand in their place captures the raw presence of their subjects. The artist's attention is focused on even the most minute details, such as muscle tone, clothing, gaze, and facial expression, capturing the strength and fragility of human beings that are often overlooked in everyday urban life. This book, his first collection of works, was privately published in 2017 and marked the beginning of a series that has since expanded into "Rojo 2" and a series of exhibitions. This work, which meticulously captures the fleeting moments of chance encounters on the street corner, crystallizes them into portraits, and has the power to return to the origins of the act of photography.
