"Memento Mori (First Edition)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shinya Fujiwara. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1944, Fujiwara began traveling throughout Asia while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, exploring civilization, religion, and views on life and death through a unique blend of photography and words. This book, first published by the Information Center Publishing Bureau in 1983, vividly depicts the boundary between life and death through crematoriums, places of worship, and people's activities captured in India, Nepal, Tibet, and other places, as its title, which means "remember death" in Latin, suggests. Poetic and philosophical texts accompany the photographs, questioning the universal value of life against the backdrop of different cultural views on life and death. It has continued to receive high praise since its publication, and has continued to be read in various forms, including a new edition published by Dassai Shobo in 1990, a new edition published by Joho Center Publishing Bureau in 2001, a "21st Century Edition" by Sangokan with updated photographs and structure in 2008, and a reprint published by Asahi Shimbun Publications in 2018. While new photographs and text have been added with each edition, the core theme has remained consistent, and it is a representative and monumental work of Fujiwara's that continues to exude impact and thought even 40 years after its first publication. This is the first edition and first printing published in 1983.
