"Japan (Second Edition)" is a collection of works by American photographer Horace Bristol (1908-1997). During World War II, Bristol photographed the South Pacific and Japan as a member of the U.S. Navy Photographic Service, and after the war, he continued to report on Asia from his base in Tokyo. He was also a member of the founding of "LIFE" magazine, and worked as a photojournalist for the Asian bureau of Fortune magazine in Japan after the war. This book is a collection of 14 booklets that capture fragments of postwar Japanese culture and life. They are organized into slim booklets (16-20 pages each) by theme, covering culture, industry, and everyday life, such as Tokyo, Geisha, Architecture, Children, Tokaido, Pottery, Silk, Pearls, Hatsushima, and Religion. The viewpoint that captures the breath of the reconstruction period such as traditional crafts, agriculture, and local children is observer-like yet warm, and the monochrome tones vividly reproduce the handiwork of artisans and the nature of the streets. The first edition was published in 1949, and this is the second edition published in 1952.
