"Malanka" is a collection of works by Ukrainian-born photographer Yelena Yemchuk. She is also active as a film director, and is characterized by a fantastical and surreal worldview. In recent years, she has released works that focus on the roots of her home country. This book features a group of photographs taken from 2019 to 2020 on the theme of "Malanka," a winter end festival in Krasna village in western Ukraine. The festival scene, where people dressed in masks and costumes unfold, creates a unique atmosphere that seems to be somewhere between reality and dreams, and is a cultural and folk document, but at the same time, it is a poetic visual storytelling that is permeated with the author's personal perspective. The book is accompanied by a text by Romanian journalist Ioana Perekhatai, which further illuminates the spiritual meaning of the festival.
