It's Always Darkest Before Dawn is a collection of works by American photographer Jeremy Cost. Known for his unique style using Polaroids, Cost has been documenting New York's night scene and LGBTQ+ culture since the early 2000s. Coming from the advertising industry, Cost has a perspective that transcends the boundaries between fashion and street, document and performance, and is particularly highly regarded for his intimate gaze on club culture. This is his first collection of works, and contains approximately 80 Polaroid works that improvise on the New York underground scene, capturing drag queens, go-go boys, and transgender performers. The texture unique to Polaroid, such as the bleeding of colors and the flickering of light, vividly conveys the night air and emotions. The subjects, who are glamorous yet somewhat ephemeral, coexist with celebration and loneliness, pride and fragility, bringing to light the multilayered meaning of the club space. This is an emotional book that marks the starting point of Jeremy Cost.
