Umimachi (Second Edition) is a collection of works by Koji Onaka, one of Japan's leading photographers. In the late 1980s, before turning 30, Onaka started his own gallery, Kaido, with photographer Susumu Fujita in a corner of Ome Kaido in Nishi-Shinjuku. Unsure of his destination, Onaka continued to exhibit landscape works in black and white that captured the original scenery of Japan, including his hometown of Kyushu, at the gallery. His first book was a compilation of these works, his representative work, Tall Awadachi Grass (1991). After that, he serialized his works in Asahi Camera, and compiled them into a photobook in 1996, his second work, Distance. Since then, Onaka has produced many masterpieces, including Slow Boat (2003), but this book is made up of images he took during a trip to the Sanriku region in the early 1990s. Many of the landscapes included here were lost in the Great East Japan Earthquake, but Onaka published this book in the same year as the disaster, in order to preserve the original landscape and its beauty for future generations and to dedicate it to the town and its people. 2nd edition.
