A Metamathematical Proposition is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shigeru Onishi (1928-1994). The magazine Bessatsu Atelier 34 New Photography, published in May 1957, was meaningful in that it introduced new photographic expressions that went beyond traditional documentary and realism, with a preface written by the pioneer of surrealism Shuzo Takiguchi. Onishi's work was also introduced there, and Takiguchi left a comment titled "Shigeru Onishi is a person unknown to me" at Onishi's solo exhibition held in 1955. Although he was a mathematics researcher, he also took photographs while studying at Hokkaido University, and later switched to artistic expression through ink painting, and was also praised by Michel Tapié, a proponent of French Informel. This book is a collection of Onishi's photographs published jointly by Steidl and the Japanese MEM Gallery. Text by photography historian Ryuichi Kaneko. Edited and designed by Manfred Heiting.
