Helix is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shinpei Yamagami. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1984, he worked at Tokyo Visual Arts and Iino Media Pro, which operates studios, before going independent as a photographer. Since the 2010s, he has been presenting his works through solo and group exhibitions, and most recently released KANON, a collection of works with a butterfly motif, from a label run by Satoru Machiguchi, a leading bookbinding designer. The subject is based on nature, and while the images are soft, the intensity woven with the subject is overwhelming. Prior to KANON, he released Epiphany (2003) and liminal (eyes) YAMAGAMI (2022) from the same Machiguchi label, but this is his first work. It was published by Akira Minagawa, a textile and fashion designer who is highly acclaimed worldwide. The book is made up of two parts: "Spectrum," a black-and-white series shot in his hometown of Kamakura between 2014 and 2015, and "The Disintegration Loops," a series shot later in color in the same location. The binding is designed to overlap the two books. This book is serene and delicate, and evokes the strength and gentleness of Yamagami as he peers deeply into the depths of his subjects.
