Mortar (Signed) is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Nagahiro Kumagai. Born in Omiya, Saitama in 1972, he graduated from the Tokyo Visual Arts Department of Photography in 1994. After graduating from the Tokyo College of Photography in 1996, he participated in the establishment of the gallery Galleria Q in the same year. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions several times a year at the same space and other galleries. This work, published in 2005, is a collection of the "Mortar" series, which can be said to be Nagahiro Kumagai's life work and has been exhibited several times. The book contains 146 black and white photographs of apartments, private house eaves, and various buildings, taken over the course of more than a decade, walking through the back alleys of Tokyo, whether in the city or downtown areas, such as Kita-Otsuka, Arakawa, Shinjuku, Tabata, Hongo, Ikebukuro, Yanaka, Higashi-Nippori, and Toranomon. The works, which were shot mainly in back alleys, have the inorganic and rugged worldview that is characteristic of black-and-white photography, but also offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who live there, and a mysterious warmth to them.
