The inaugural issue of fashion and culture magazine Dune, directed by legendary editor-in-chief Hayashi Fumihiro, was published in summer 1993. Hayashi, who passed away at the young age of 46 after suffering from colon cancer, utilized his network in the fashion, art and subculture fields to have a number of distinguished artists and photographers participate in Dune. From the inaugural issue in 1993, which featured Miyazawa Rie on the cover, to the 33rd issue, the final issue in 2008, which featured Kikuchi Rinko on the cover. It was then republished in 2011 as Libertin / Dune, but the magazine ended up being Hayashi's last work. This issue is the memorable first issue mentioned above, and it is a collaboration with many artists, including a portrait of Rie Miyazawa by Kei Ogata, features on Kate Moss and Winona Ryder, photographs by Nan Goldin, and texts by Kenichi Yamakawa, Haruko Mizukami, Hiroshi Morinaga, and Shigeo Goto. Art direction is by Yasushi Fujimoto.
