"Philippines" is a photo collection by Ishikawa Mao, one of Japan's leading female photographers. Ishikawa Mao is a photographer from Okinawa who has been focusing on the city and is currently attracting worldwide attention. She studied at a photography class taught by Tomatsu Shomei and began her career as a photographer in the mid-1970s. She worked in a bar for black people in order to take pictures of American soldiers, and at the time she had a boyfriend who was also an American soldier. Despite her focus on Okinawa, she disliked the restrictive relationships that come with being a small island, and no matter what anyone said or how they looked at her, she stuck to her own style and walked in search of freedom. It was because of this that she was able to frankly depict the "base town" and the "black people and women" who live and play there. After more than 10 years, Ishikawa visited the base town again. The former vitality had faded, and the working women had transformed into Filipinos. She closely follows Filipino women who came to work in search of money and husbands, and from their daily lives working in bars to visiting their home countries, she describes the reality of the Philippines. A collection of unknown early masterpieces by Ishikawa Mao, who continued to pour out love for people living in the "other side" world.
