A photo book by Canadian photographer Jeff Wall. After graduating from university, Wall devoted himself to art studies under art historian T. J. Clark in London, and in the 1970s and 1980s, he not only produced photographs, but also taught at art universities and published critiques of contemporary artists such as On Kawara. Many of his works are based on the citation and re-presentation of his knowledge of art history, and are inspired by painters such as Édouard Manet and Katsushika Hokusai, as well as writers such as Yukio Mishima and Ralph Ellison. Wall gives his photographs a painterly multifaceted and narrative nature, while raising social issues lurking in modern life. Wall's "cinematic photographs," taken under strict settings, have been highly praised for establishing a new position for photography in contemporary art. This book is a series of works by famous artists published by the publisher Phaidon, and includes a collection of his representative works (with captions) as well as texts and interviews by Wall at the end of the book, and also introduces a chronology and biography.
