``La Douceur de Vivre'' is a collection of works by Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990), one of the leading Dutch photographers. This is Elsken's masterpiece following ``Love on the Left Bank'' (1956), ``Bagara'' (1958), and ``Jazz'' (1959), and is a masterpiece among masterpieces published in other than Japanese and English versions. The English version title is "Sweet Life" and this book is the French version. This is a record of Elsken's 14-month journey with his wife Gerda, and consists of illustrations taken in Africa, America, and Asia. It is full of the "humanity" and "love" typical of Elsken, and the powerful illustrations with close-ups and contrast shine. What made this image possible was "Japanese printing technology." When Elsken published this book, he wrote a letter to his friend Hideko Hosoe, asking him, ``I would like to use matte gravure printing similar to Rose Punishment, so please introduce me to a Japanese printing company.'' Have you checked the printing? From landscapes to portraits to snaps, 14 months of Elsken's "Sweet Life". (The French version is of similar quality to the Japanese version, but printed in the Netherlands)
