``Okinawa Kankara Sanshin (Signed)'' is a photo book by Japanese photographer Koshichi Taira (1939-1994). Koshichi Taira, along with Yasuo Higa and Kenshichi Hisashiki, has had a great influence as a pioneer in the Okinawan photography world. After working in the Ryukyu Shimpo Photography Department and the Ryukyu Broadcasting Television News Department, he joined the Public Relations Department of the Ryukyu Government (now Okinawa Prefectural Office) in 1970. As can be seen from his career, he has been involved in post-war Okinawa, which is still deeply scarred by the war and shaken by the return to the mainland and the issue of military bases. Looking at it from a journalistic perspective, Taira published ``Okinawa'' in 1970, and self-published ``Painukaji'' in 1976. ``Painukaji'' is a documentary filmed over a five-year period in Miyako and the Yaeyama Islands that received high acclaim and won the Kimura Ihei Photography Award in 1977. This book is a record of Okinawa from 1961 to 1981, the 20 years that spanned the country's return to the mainland, and while it depicts casual everyday life, memories of the war are woven throughout. The second half includes portraits of people of political and cultural merit in Okinawa, as well as notes written by citizens during and after the war. Taira's photographs are always filled with the power to remind us of history, as if we are reminded of the hardships of Okinawa in the image of an old woman with deep wrinkles.
