"Outland" is a photobook by Roger Ballen, one of the leading contemporary photographers. Born in New York and currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Roger Ballen has long documented the apartheid issue and, in recent years, has expanded his field of work, garnering acclaim for his collaboration with Comme des Garçons. This historic photobook, published in 2001, made Ballen famous. It depicts the lives of the poor white people living in the remote region he calls "Outland." Building on the bonds he has built with the residents of these small villages over the course of more than 20 years, the book offers detailed portraits of the residents and their lifestyles. Furthermore, the book's unique depiction of their messages through graffiti on the walls and hanging objects is also unique. The photographs for this book marked a turning point for Ballen, as his style shifted toward a more abstract, painterly, and sculptural style, evolving toward a more artistically sophisticated approach. 2009 reprint version.
