"Novel Seoul / Seoul to Rain (Signed)" is a photo collection by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. This work, considered a sequel to "Story Seoul," which he co-created with writer Kenji Nakagami in 1984, is comprised of snapshots taken during his first visit to Korea in 1982, followed by trips to the city in 1986, 1991, and 2000. While Nakagami captured the ethereal atmosphere of Seoul in "Story Seoul," Araki captures the city in monochrome snapshots. Despite the changes over the past 20 years, this work captures the city's unchanging appearance, with its hustle and bustle, squalid streets, and children playing in the back alleys, despite the increasing urbanization. This work also had a sequel. In the summer of 2004, Araki returned to Seoul with Nakagami's daughter, writer Nori Nakagami, and published "Memories of Seoul Again." Seoul may be a special city for Araki because of the presence of the writer Kenji Nakagami, but the thickness of this book, which is about 600 pages long, feels like an accumulation of his time visiting the city as well as deep memories of Nakagami.
