Artist Shozo Kitadai was a member of Jikken Koubou, a pioneering group of intermedia artists in post-war Tokyo. Jikken Kobo, which began its activities at the end of the 1940s, includes Kitadai, musicians Toru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, musician Takahiro Sonoda, poetry and critic Kuniharu Akiyama, modeling artist Katsuhisa Yamaguchi, and photographer Seiji Otsuji. , painter Hideko Fukushima, printmaker Tetsuro Komai, lighting artist Naoji Imai, and other young artists gathered together to experiment with comprehensive art, and its godfather was Shuzo Takiguchi. This book, Form and Simulation: Shozo Kitadai's Photography and Experiments, is a catalog of an exhibition held in 2013 at the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki. Kitadai began his career as a photographer in 1956, and in the 1960s he became active as a commercial photographer as he explored constructivist forms. From the 1970s onwards, he distanced himself from the commercial field and shifted to creating works that were particular about handwork, such as the production of kites and model airplanes, and self-made cameras. This book follows in the footsteps of Hokudai, focusing on photography, and presents unique works created from his keen perspective and approach to modeling.
