Crosstown is a collection of works by Ellen Levitt, one of America's leading female photographers. Levitt is best known for his work ``A Way of Seeing,'' which was filmed in Harlem and other areas where many black people live in poverty. He was a disciple of American photographer Walker Evans, who was admired and respected by all post-war photographers, and was one of the few photographers that Evans recognized. One of Evans' masterpieces is ``Many are Called,'' which secretly captures people riding on the New York subway. There is also an anecdote that Nobuyoshi Araki did the same thing when he was at Dentsu, and when he tried to compile a series of photos into a photo book, he learned of the existence of ``Many are Called'' and decided not to do it because he didn't want it to be seen as a double take. Levitt accompanied Evans on the shoot, and the series finally saw the light of day in 2017 under the title ``Manhattan Transit.'' Here is a collection of Levitt's masterpieces compiled in monochrome and color.
