"Under a Grudging Sun" is a photobook by American photographer Alex Webb. Webb began his photography career as a high school student, participating in workshops with masters such as Bruce Davidson. He attended Harvard University (majoring in history and literature) and continued his studies at the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts there. After graduating, he embarked on a career as a journalist. He became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979 and continues to actively publish his work today. Webb's images, featuring bold compositions, high-contrast colors, and skillful use of light and shadow, convey a strong journalistic message and are regarded as a pioneer of "color journalism," a perspective distinct from "new color." This book is a collection of his early work, originally published in 1989 and shot in Haiti.
