"Tokyo Dance" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Kenji Kasai. The son of Akira Kasai, a renowned dancer and choreographer in the avant-garde art world, Kasai studied at the Rudolf Steiner School in Germany during his teens and majored in architecture and environmental design at Tama Art University, making him a true artist at heart. He continues to be a leading photographer in commercial, music, nude, and portrait photography. This book is his first photobook, published in 1997. In the spring of 1994, he met the legendary American female photographer Nan Goldin, and that summer he participated in a summer school where Goldin taught. The two photographers have maintained a close friendship ever since. At the same school, David Armstrong, a fellow member of the 'Boston School' who also taught there, encouraged him to shoot in color, and this book expresses an intimate and beautiful world woven from color and monochrome images. The commentary text by Goldin at the end of the book is also excellent, making this a valuable record of the early career of this promising photographer. No obi strip.
