"New Edition Kyoto Laid Bare (Signed)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Fusayoshi Kai (1949-). Born in Oita Prefecture, Kai has been based in Kyoto for over half a century, continuously photographing the city and its people. He was also involved in the founding of the coffee shop "Honyarado" in Demachiyanagi, and has built his own unique photographic world while deepening his relationships with Kyoto's cultural figures and artists. Rather than the Kyoto symbolized by tourist attractions and traditional culture, he is a photographer who focuses on the back alleys, shopping streets, and the casual gestures of people passing by, intimately documenting the human drama that breathes life into the land. This book reveals the true face of Kyoto that Kai has walked through for many years, through numerous monochrome photographs. People crossing the street on bicycles, people chatting on street corners, the appearance of old shops and alleys—there is a Kyoto of everyday life that is not marked on tourist maps. While documenting the city's transformation over time, the photographs exude a warm empathy and humor for the people, conveying not only nostalgia for disappearing landscapes, but also the rich vitality of everyday life in the city. This is a deeply moving photo collection that tells another chapter in Kyoto's history.
