"Shinjuku, India, Shinjuku" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Katsumi Watanabe. Watanabe was known as a wandering photographer, taking portraits in sets of three for 200 yen while roaming the streets. From the mid-1960s, he continued to walk the streets of Shinjuku at night, capturing night workers, young people, vagrants, homosexuals, delinquents, and yakuza on camera, and was captivated by Shinjuku, a theater of life where many dramas unfolded. This book is a collection of images of Shinjuku taken in his early period from 1968 to 1981, his self-funded project in India starting in 1982, and his later period in Shinjuku from 1984 to 2003, and includes many previously unpublished photographs. In addition to interesting text by Watanabe himself, it also features contributions from Daido Moriyama and Shuji Terayama.
