"Suzu" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Kozue Takagi (1985-). She rose to prominence after winning the New Cosmos of Photography Grand Prix while still a student at Tokyo Polytechnic University, and has since created a unique image by boldly incorporating digital processing and collage into her photographic expression. In 2010, she won the 35th Ihei Kimura Photography Award for her photobooks "MID" and "GROUND". This work was published the following year and is set in Shimosuwa, Nagano Prefecture, where Takagi spent her first six years of life. Having moved her creative base from Tokyo to Nagano, Takagi stayed in Shimosuwa for about 100 days, as if to reaffirm her own formative landscape. She photographed her childhood home, the townspeople, children, the nature of Suwa, and the Onbashira Festival, overlapping vague childhood memories with the landscape before her eyes today. The title "SUZU" (bell) has long been used to let the gods know one's whereabouts, and in this work, it carries the meaning of listening intently to the faint sound that comes from her past self. In stark contrast to the powerful imagery of his previous works, this book quietly explores the fundamental question of "where I come from" through the lens of land and memory, making it a crucial work in Takagi's career.
