"Kamakura Scape (Signed)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Yasuo Otsuji (1945-). Born in Nagasaki City, Otsuji worked in the photography department of the United News Agency before becoming a freelance photographer in 2000. He is a documentary photographer who has continuously observed social movements and people's lives. In 1989, he won the Shiten Award for "Appeal for Peace," which captured anti-nuclear protests in New York. He has also published photo collections set in Nagasaki and Paris. This book captures Kamakura, the ancient capital where Minamoto no Yoritomo established the shogunate, as a city where history and modernity intertwine in many ways. Rather than Kamakura as a tourist destination symbolized by temples, shrines, and scenic spots, he focuses on the densely populated streets and everyday living spaces, depicting the transformation of the city and the traces of history left within it in monochrome. As the words on the book's obi (paper band) suggest—"The present is layered upon the fortified city of Yoritomo, which turned its back on Kyoto"—the complex history of Kamakura is brought to light through landscapes where past and present intersect. This collection of works, which can be called another portrait of the city, combines the keen observational skills honed through photojournalism with a deep interest in the memory of the land.
