"The Kiyoshi Otsuji Photo Archive: A Photographer's Trajectory in Contemporary Art 1940–1980" by Japanese photographer Kiyoshi Otsuji (1923–2001). He began his photographic career shortly after the war, and in the 1950s joined the avant-garde art group "Jikken Kobo" (Experimental Workshop) centered around Shuzo Takiguchi. He later formed the "Graphic Group" with Shozo Kitadai and Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, and was an important figure in postwar Japanese photography, pursuing the possibilities of photographic expression through photograms and multiple exposures. At the same time, he interacted with many artists, designers, and musicians, including Takiguchi, and documented their activities from within. He nurtured younger generations at Kuwasawa Design Institute, Tokyo Zokei University, and Tsukuba University, and was also a "thinker of photography," engaging in criticism and photographic theory. Based on the vast Kiyoshi Otsuji archive housed at Musashino Art University, this book re-examines his activities from the 1940s to the 1980s through works, negatives, contact sheets, documentary photographs, and printed materials. By presenting not only the finished works but also the processes of photography and selection, this book illuminates Otsuji's vision and thought process, and re-examines postwar Japanese avant-garde art itself, including the Experimental Workshop, through photographs, making it a highly informative work.
