"Katsura Imperial Villa (2010)," a photobook by Yasuhiro Ishimoto, one of Japan's leading photographers, is considered one of his masterpieces, alongside "A Certain Place, A Certain Day" (1958) and "Chicago, Chicago" (1969). Ishimoto returned to Japan in the early 1950s and was captivated by the sense of unity and rhythm created by the "garden, architecture, and space" of Katsura, which differed from other architecture he had seen in Kyoto and Nara that same year. He stayed at the famous Kyoto inn "Tawaraya" and took photographs. The first edition, published in 1960, became an immortal masterpiece thanks to the collaboration of renowned artists: the preface and text were written by Kenzo Tange, one of Japan's leading architects, and Walter Gropius, the director of the Bauhaus; the layout and book design were by Herbert Bayer, also a Bauhaus graduate; and the title calligraphy for Katsura was done by artist Toko Shinoda. The 1971 edition featured a complete revision of the illustrations and layout by Yusaku Kamekura, a leading Japanese graphic designer who also designed "Chicago, Chicago." This is the 2010 revised edition, complete with shipping box and dust jacket.
